Sharon Savage Yildiz statement in threads I read - I keep hearing that its $20,000 or whatever to ship home a military dog. Lots of dog rescues are promoting the idea that this is super expensive in hopes of soliciting contributions. This is a crock. Ive flown dogs and cats on over 25 international flights between Europe, Asia, North & South America, the most recent being in 2012. Flights up to 17 hours each. And the price virtually never varies, regardless of cabin vs. cargo and small vs. big pet. The cost is.... $200-300. Thats right--a maximum of three hundred dollars. To bring a dog into the U.S., all you need is $300, proof of rabies vaccination and a vets signature that the dog is healthy (both together cost about $20 in developing countries). I think the rescues and places that are soliciting thousands in contributions to ship each dog home, when its only $320, are making a ton of money off of people. I think any soldier should be able to afford $320 to ship home a dog if they want to. I would prefer to see the government pay for the shipping, but it really is NOT prohibitively expensive. Its about the same cost in many big cities to adopt a dog from the shelter. Now my comment - I definitely think things can be handled so much better if the Government that has the resources did their part and did not rely on rescues spending way more than necessary.
