Shawns amp thread got me curious. Why do the majority of gear hounds seem to think 100 Watts is the magic number for an amp? Are you really going to dime that head out to its max capacity? 99.9% of us are never going to play a 20,000 seat arena. Most clubs I have ever played at will mic your amp and make you turn down so the sound guy has ultimate control. I used to own a Peavey Ultra Plus which is a 120W head. It also had a step-down mode that put the head at half power. I never turned it up past 12 oclock even in that mode for rehearsal/jam use let alone playing on stage. Is a 150W Triple Rectifier head really necessary in practical applications or is it the bigger penis syndrome? Hell I ran one of those Orange Micro Terror heads through a 4X12 a few times and that little thing was able to keep up. This is by no means a judgment upon anyone. Im genuinely curious.
