Shears - A very sharp pair of scissors used to cut fabric (not intended for paper). they have a handle that curves up from the blades which can distinguish them from regular scissors. Shears are usually between 8 and 7 inches long. Pinking Shears- A smaller pair of shears is used for cutting threads, clipping curves and cutting notches. It is about 5 to 6 inches long or less than 15 cm in length. Needles- All needles for hand sewing must be smooth, with a sharp and pointy tip. They have a hole to thread at the top and come in a verity of sizes to use depending on the materials you are using. There are also machine needles which are a vital part of the sewing machine. They usually held in the machine by a screw and a screwdriver is needed to remove and insert needles into the machine. Unlike the ones used for hand stitching the hole to tread in a machine needle is at the bottom of the needle near the pointed edge which first penetrates the fabric. On one side of a sewing machine needle is flat, the flat side must always face a specific direction in order for the machine to sew. Pins- Pins are pointed and sharp. They look like needles on one end but with heads like those of nails on the other end. These are used to hold pieces of cloth together or to keep folded parts of garments in place. Pin cushion- A pin cushion is a small fancy bag made of cotton cloth, wool or velvet. It is filled with felt wool or dried sawdust. It is used for holding and keeping pins and needles. Emery bag- This is a small bag that looks like a pin cushion. It is filled with fine, dried sand for polishing and cleaning pins and needles. Thimble- A thimble is a small "hat-like" tool that fits the thumb firmly. It is usually made of plastic or aluminum and is rough all over the outer surface. It also can be used to protect your other fingers from being pricked by the needle well hand sewing. Measuring tools- You need 2 measuring tools: A plastic sewing ruler that you can use to pattern draft. A plastic tape measurer you can use to take body measurements and measuring to pin straight of grain. Threads- A thread is a very thin fine cord of cotton spun and dyed used for sewing. It comes in spools, or larger cones.
