Open to the public. Sheboygan Visual Artists (SVA) will host special guest Brian Carlson, Artist/Activist/Educator. Please join us for this temporary exhibit and gallery talk. There will be hundreds of Brians portraits on view from his ongoing series, Aparcidos Brians stories will inspire you. Aparecidos is an ongoing painting installation for the victims of Latin American genocide, often called the desaparecidos (the disappeared) as the bodies were destroyed or hidden in clandestine graveyards, disappearing them. From the mid-seventies to the mid-eighties, six countries in Latin America came under the toxic cloud of Operation Condor, an orchestrated state terrorism that included arresting, torturing, murdering and disappearing any opposition. The US government not only was well aware of Plan Condor but aided and encouraged its execution, accomplices to what became ideological genocide. Brian Carlsons ongoing memorial consists of hand painted portraits of victims. At this point, after two and a half years of painting, he has painted over 800 portraits and large groups of them have been exhibited in several venues in Argentina including ESMA, the Dachau of Argentina...formerly a torture center and now a museum of memory. The installation in Sheboygan will include approximately 100 portraits of victims from four countries. We hope you will attend and learn more about this history.
