Sheila Datz FBI friend Ray Staars comment. Racism in the South is a way of life. If you live in Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia...ANYPLACE south of the Mason-Dixon line, you hear racist remarks from the day youre born until the day you die. Not everyone makes them, but the ones who do are seldom admonished by the ones who dont. And a lot of it is non-verbal. One white woman, seeing a black shopper trying on clothing, will exchange a look of consternation with another white woman, as if to say: Oh, my lord, who do those people think they are? Lets face it. We are only 150 years away from the day when a few of us owned a lot of the rest of us. We cant be finished with racism yet. Its just not possible. It was too awful and it went on for far too long. Moreover, millions of us died fighting a war over it. We are all infected in this country. The disease is racism. We all need help, every one of us. but in the South, theres an especially virulent strain of racism, and sadly, even 40 years after the death of segregation, they still need help most of all.
