Sheila asks My 11 1/2 year old son was diagnosed at Kennedy - TopicsExpress

Sheila asks My 11 1/2 year old son was diagnosed at Kennedy Krieger with severe autism and moderate mental retardation at 3 1/2 years old. We followed a variety of therapies, including floortime, OT, speech, GF/CF diet, and a supplement program through a DAN doctor. He made great progress and started school on time in a typical classroom without a 1-on-1. He gets all As and Bs and definitely is cognitively on grade level. When he was 8 1/2 years old we had him reevaluated back at Kennedy and the diagnosis was PDD. The doctor at the time said she felt he might also have generalized anxiety, but it didnt seem to be anything we couldnt manage. But, now, 3 years later, the anxiety has blown up, pretty much over night, and his ability to function is declining every day. He is afraid of swallowing things- pencil points, rocks, gasoline, etc. He is afraid he has cancer. He is afraid his heart will stop. He is afraid his penis will fall off. We have been seeing a cognitive behavioral therapist for about a month now and have an appnt. 1/5/15 with a child psychiatrist. (This was the soonest appnt. we could get...many places including Hopkins, have 5-6 month wait lists.) We are also on the cancellation list to try to get in sooner. The past few days my son wont eat because he is afraid he will choke. He also, because hes not eating, is having trouble going to the bathroom. My question is (and please no judgement): has anyone else needed to use medication to ease their childs anxiety? What medicine and how has it worked for your child? Are you glad you tried it?
