Shelling, Stone Pelting Follows Malik’s Arrest; they protested over Pakistani Refugees. Srinagar January 16, 2015: Police and forces used tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters at Maisuma on Friday who were trying to reach Lalchowk to register their protest against proposed settlement of the West Pakistani Refugees. Police also arrested Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Mohammad Yaseen Malik resulting in violent protests in the area.After the Friday prayers, JKLF supporters assembled and started sloganeering against the proposed move of settlement of West Pakistani Refugees.They raised anti-India and pro-freedom slogans and started marching towards Lalchowk. They protest march was headed by JKLF chairman Yaseen Malik.As the protesters reached near Budshah Chowk, the already deployed heavy contingent of police and CRPF personnel swung into action and stopped the protesters from marching ahead. When the protesters resisted moving forward police and forces personnel used tear smoke shells to disperse them. The incident resulted panic in the area and the shopkeepers downed their shutters in haste. Soon the deserted lanes of Maisuma witnessed stoned pelting on the men in uniform which lasted for more than an hour. Separatists are against any “concessions” to the West Pakistani Refugees in Jammu and Kashmir terming it “an attempt to change the demography of the Muslim majority state”. They have threatened an agitation against any such move.JKLF had announced a sit in Lalchowk against the proposed “concessions” to the West Pakistani Refugees.
