Sheriff Tanner takes ALS Ice Bucket Challenge The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has been sweeping through social media like wild fire. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrigs Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. (Taken from ALS Website: alsa.org/ ) For those who are not Social Media gurus, the ALS Ice Bucket challenge has been a means of garnering awareness, support and donations for this disease. Members of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office have not been immune. Recently, Sheriff PJ Tanner was nominated to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and we wanted to share that video with you. Sheriff Tanner and his Command Staff completed the challenge together. Video: Command Staff (Front row - Left to Right): LtCol Neil Baxley, Chief Deputy Michael Hatfield, Sheriff P.J.
