Sherlock Holmes Before we went to London, Tessa only knew of - TopicsExpress

Sherlock Holmes Before we went to London, Tessa only knew of Sherlock Holmes as a famous detective in the movies. Shed never read his books but have seen them tucked away in her grandparents house in Kota Bharu. When we were in London and Sherlock Holmes was plastered all over the Baker Street Station, she wondered why Sherlock Holmes had a home if he was just a fictitious character? Was he real or fake? I knew he was a character of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle but I had no clue either what the story was with Sherlock Holmes house so we set off to find out. When the Author first wrote of Sherlock Holmes, he gave him a fictitious address in the early years on Baker Street when the address never even existed. Over the years, expansion made the address real and a building society owned the lot for the longest time. After an occupation of 70 years and a resolved dispute, in 2002, the Sherlock Holmes non profit organisation finally took over and converted it into the Sherlock Holmes museum as it is today. Amazingly tons of mail written to Sherlock Holmes over the years were received by the Building Society and the Sherlock Holmes foundation had to employ a secretary just to see to this mail. Isnt it incredible that a fictitious character became so real that he actually has a real physical home to his name now? Its almost like Harry Potter....
