Shin Jung Taes World : Competing Vested Interests Ep 19 aprilstarr The need to claim Club Shanghai has reached its critical stage. Two contending factions -the Hwangbang and the Ill Gook Hwae were on the move to get Club Shanghai. Another faction, Jae Hwa is holding on to the management tenaciously. All three have competing vested interests on the Club.* The Hwangbangs covetous look at the Club was to make it the means to sell opium and through it spread the trade to its other clubs and casinos. This interest was to make the club its cash cow to finance Chiang Kai Seks army and its military campaigns . Jae Hwa was given the not so subtle suggestion to do the opium trade but he refuses to follow. Jung Tae was soon eyed to take over with the pretext that Jae Hwa couldnt protect the Bangsamtong and the club, by the recent spate of murders it instigated. But Jung Tae was not predisposed to follow. The Ill Gook Hwae, on the other hand, considered getting the Club as part of taking over Shanghai as ordered by the Japanese military. It is for political strategic reason as the Japanese influence has of late been spreading in China. Aoki took it upon himself to dangle an offer to Jae Hwa for him to cooperate in exchange for condoning the clubs loan, 10 % ownership in the HB held casino, continued stay as manager of the club and Bangsamtong and even no longer persecute the escapee Ok Ryeon. At first Jae Hwa would not hear of it no matter how tempting the offer but soon realized that is his only way to stay on and survive. Jung Tae is against the idea and struck the nerve endings in Jae Hwas person in a big way. Who is Jung Tae to block him in what he intend to do? To top the unsettling feeling was Jung Taes admission he will forcibly remove Jae Hwa from his position though not interested in taking over the Clubs management (even at the behest of his ritual father). If Aoki aggressively able to convince Jae Hwa to throw his lot with Ill Gook Hwe it was due to Denkais order. Earlier an internal shakeup happened when Gaya pointblank told Denkai she loves Jung Tae. She challenged him to kill her like he ordered her mother killed when she fell in love with her Joseon father. Denkai couldnt kill Gaya and instead asked Shinichi to do it. Shinichi refused and almost received his fatal blow if he didnt block his sword. Aoki stopping Denkai had also seized the chance to slice through Shinichis shoulder effectively stripping him of being a sword man. These acts of rebellion was meted by demotion. Stripped of power Gaya was no longer in charge of Shanghais IGH. Aka sent by Denkai went to see Jung Tae and engaged him in a fight. He had suffered a dislocated shoulder as a result and hardly fit to fight Jae Hwa over ownership of the Club. Mo who had become his ally, saving the two girls and catching the killers gave him some advice. Old Man Fly and his assistant lent him some fighting tips and practice. The expected bloody fight is for the following day with bets placed on the two by the Bangsamtong people. The episode ends with Aoki assuring Gaya he will help her with her revenge in exchange for what he wants. *There is a real Club Shanghai whose structure boasted of several floors, longest bar and other luxurious amenities built with elegance and splendor in mind and enjoyed exclusive patronage of expats. It was recently reconstructed and leased by the Waldorf Astoria Hotel (Wikipedia)
