Shining a light on luminaires The luminaires market is huge and continuing to grow. Looking at the year to date (January 2013–June 2013), the market was worth a massive £157.5 million, with garden lighting performing particularly well. Comparing Q2 with Q1, the combined performance of garden solar and garden mains lighting saw a volume growth of almost 335%. Value growth is lower at just under 200%. This is due to the large volumes of sub £2 units sold, which account for almost 48% of total sales in this area over the first two quarters of 2013. It is not surprising that the market is dominated by solar products. Even in more specialist channels, such as the DIY channel, this is true. The simple fact is that should you wish to install mains garden lighting today, it is a specialist job that, for most DIYers, still needs the support of a qualified electrician. Moving the spotlight to indoor lighting, three out of four ceiling, wall or spot luminaire lamps sold hold an odd number of lamps (one, three, or five), with even numbered lamps being left in the shade. The buzzword of the moment in the market is “LED”. Sales currently show only a very small share of less than 3% as integrated LED product. This is, however, expected to grow significantly over the coming years as LED lighting becomes more popular. Just looking through electrical wholesaler websites aimed at the professional market, as well as lighting shelves in the mass market, it can be seen that a vast array of LED products are becoming available. Jatin Kuckreja, account manager at GfK, commented, “We now have reporting data available from January 2013 to date, and we have been pleasantly surprised at the activity seen in this market – particularly the garden lighting sector, which has been boosted by the great weather we have had this summer in Q2 2013.”
