Shivani Bhalla, founder of the Ewaso Lions program in northern Kenya, received one of the Whitley Fund for Nature’s prestigious awards yesterday for the Warrior Watch program. Focused on the survival of the lions in northern Kenya, the Ewaso Lions works within the Ewaso Nyiro River ecosystem – a destination most of our Kenya safari travelers visit. Warrior Watch empowers young Samburu warriors to become wildlife ambassadors, works to reduce human-wildlife conflict and improve tolerance of predators through education and capacity-building. As a result, this is one of the only regions in Kenya where lion populations have increased outside of fenced areas in the past five years. Here is the summary on the Whitley Fund for Nature website. I also suggest you take a look at the Ewaso Lions website – in my opinion, this is one of the most effective community conversation programs in Africa! – Tom LaRock ewasolions.org/ whitleyaward.org/winners/warrior-watch-enabling-the-coexistence-of-people-and-lions/
