Shoalhaven City Council is alerting residents to the presence of an east coast low weather system forecast to hit the area over the coming days. With many of the area’s lakes and creeks currently open to the ocean, Council is reminding residents to be mindful of weather conditions and take appropriate action to ensure local properties remain flood safe. Mayor, Joanna Gash said east coast low weather systems were notorious for bringing large amounts of heavy rain and ocean swells, both of which can lead to flooding. “It is extremely important local residents prepare themselves against the likelihood of flooding,” said Clr Gash. “While some of our lakes entrances are open, it is important to remember that water can flow in as well as out. “Opportunities for the ocean to enter the lake through the entrance channel increase at high tide while large waves can also wash over the entrance sand spit, adding to the volume of water in the lake.” “With weather forecasters predicting heavy rain and large swells over the coming days I would urge all local residents to ensure their property is prepared against the possibility of flood.” Residents can access weather warnings and lake level information at bom.gov.au. Flood safe information can be accessed from the SES FloodSafe website floodsafe.au For emergency assistance please contact the SES on 132 500.
