Shoes.Soles of,to be specific - I had never heard of Shoo Goo but it is apparently available in the UK,but there is an older formula for toughening leather and making it impervious (to water presumably) and it is; 1 part caoutchouc or gutta-percha dissolved in 16 parts benzene or other solvent to which is added 10 parts linseed oil.Wax and rosin may be added to thicken. This comes from the reprinted Henleys Formulas book, the original dating from 1907 so way after our main period of interest, but it did get me wondering if any such preparation was ever applied to shoe soles back then? Shoo Goo is probably easier and cheaper for the modern person and I know benzene is not a friendly thing to work with, but I did wonder if there was any 18thC equivalent of this?
