Shopian, Sep 18: Police have recorded statement of a key witness, Adil Ahmad Wachkoo, who survived the CRPF firing at Gagran here on September 7 which left four persons dead. “A team of police officials including a Deputy Superintendent of Police and Station House Officer visited our house a few days ago and recorded my statement about the incident,” said Adil who had a close shave with death. 19-year old Adil, who had to sit in an examination on the day at Degree College near the CRPF camp at Gagran, had asked his childhood friend Tawseef Ahmad Bhat to drop him on his motorcycle there. They were stopped by the CRPF near Gagran camp. “I narrated the entire incident to them (police),” said Adil who is bed-ridden at his home, recovering from the injury. Recalling the tragedy in which Tawseef along with three other persons got killed in the CRPF firing; Adil said as they reached near the camp the CRPF men asked Tawseef to halt the motorcycle. The CRPF personnel, he said, asked Tawseef to prove the ownership of the motorcycle. “We were asked to park the bike on the roadside and we followed the directions,” Adil said. “Suddenly we heard a gunshot and both of us ran towards a nearby street for safety. More gunshots followed. I asked Tawseef to lay flat on the ground but he responded that a bullet has hit him. I got scared on seeing blood pouring down my abdomen. I looked behind, a non-local laborer was also laying flat on the ground,” said Adil. Though Adil survived the guns shot, Tawseef was not lucky. He succumbed to injuries later at a local hospital. “I don’t know where from the bullets were coming,” said Adil. Later it became evident that four persons were killed in the incident. “Six youth were riding on two bikes and were signaled for security check. One of them refused to show his I-card and abused the sentry and then pulled out his pistol and opened fire… Our men fired in retaliation killing three of them on spot and injuring two. The sixth person managed to flee from the spot,” CRPF spokesperson Kishor Khushal had said on September 7. Police later said three of those killed were innocent youth. “I was going to sit in the examination. I have already shared it with police. They even took away my admit card for investigation purpose,” said Adil. Personnel of the same CRPF camp allegedly killed another civilian on September 11. Following the mounting public pressure, the Government on September 12 ordered a magisterial inquiry into the firing incidents of September 7 and 11. The police was simultaneously asked to probe the killings and submit a report. Police however remained tightlipped about having recorded Adil’s statement. “I don’t know about it,” said Station House Officer, Shopian, Irshad Reshi, when asked whether they had visited Adil’s home and recorded his statement.
