Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 349 AM EST Sat Dec 13 2014 Valid 12Z Sat Dec 13 2014 - 12Z Mon Dec 15 2014 ...Snow...ice...and severe weather expected with a storm system deepening over the Great Plains on Sunday... Widespread shower activity is expected with a cold front pressing eastward through the Intermountain West and Rockies on Saturday. Precipitation totals will be highest along the favored slopes of the terrain...and falling temperatures and snow levels behind the front should lead to moderate accumulations in the higher elevations of the Rockies. The cold front will continue its eastward push on Sunday. Along the northern portion of the boundary...a surface wave tracking from the Dakotas to northern Minnesota could bring light rains to the Upper Midwest. Farther south on the boundary...a potent piece of energy aloft will help intensify a surface low in the lee of the Colorado Rockies. The surface low is expected to take a steady track towards the Middle Mississippi Valley Sunday into Monday...and Gulf moisture being pulled into the deepening storm system will fuel a wide swath of heavy precipitation across the south central U.S.. Severe storms could threaten portions of Oklahoma and North Texas...while a band of snow and ice will be possible across Nebraska and into southwest Minnesota. After a day of record rainfall...California will see a break in precipitation this weekend; however...the next Pacific system will begin impacting drought-stricken California by early Monday. A stagnant closed low spinning over the Northeast will finally begin to lift out into the Atlantic this weekend...putting an end to the light snow showers across the region. Gerhardt
