Short Range Forecast Discussion NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD 204 AM EST Tue Feb 25 2014 Valid 12Z Tue Feb 25 2014 - 12Z Thu Feb 27 2014 ...Very cold arctic air continues to filter into the Eastern two thirds of the country... ...Showers and thunderstorms on the increase across the Gulf coast... ...Rain begins moving into California on Wednesday... An expansive area of surface high pressure remains parked over the eastern two thirds of the nation through the entire forecast period. This will continue to usher in the arctic air from Canada and keep temperatures well below normal for this time of the year. Places from the Central U.S. to the Ohio and Mississippi Valleys could see daytime high temperatures dipping as low 20 to 30 degrees below normal. While conditions overall should remain mostly dry, a few snow showers here and there across the Ohio Valley on Wednesday should not be ruled out as weak impulses of energy aloft move through. A warm front stretched across through the Gulf Coast will increase the shower and thunderstorm activity across the Gulf Coast and Southeastern states on Tuesday and into Wednesday as copious amounts of moisture get drawn up out of the Gulf of Mexico. By Wednesday afternoon, the front begins to push offshore again and heavier precipitation should begin to diminish. However, a developing surface wave along this front could clip the Mid-Atlantic with some light snows on Wednesday before it moves father out to sea. Out west, most of the region should remain precipitation free on Tuesday with the exception of the higher terrain of the Northern Rockies where some light snow showers are possible along a weakening stationary boundary snaked through the region. By Wednesday however, precipitation begins to push inland through California as a system out in the Pacific moves towards the coast. Monarski
