Short profile of Surujrattan Rambachan SHORT PROFILE OF SURUJ RAMBACHAN By training and professionally, Dr Surujrattan Rambachan is a Leadership and Management Development Consultant and has worked throughout the Caribbean region. A former Lecturer at the University of the West Indies and also at the UWI Institute of Business, he has also been a consultant to all the major corporations in Trinidad and Tobago. Between 1987 and 1990 he served as the Ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago to Brazil, with accreditations to Chile, Argentina and Uruguay. He was a Minister of Government and a Senator between 1990 and 1991. Between 2003 and 2009 he was the Mayor of the Borough of Chaguanas. This was his second stint in local government having served as Chairman of eth St Patrick County Council between 1983 and 1987. In 2010, he was appointed Senate Minority Leader under the UNC and won the elections for the Constituency of Tabaquite in May 2010. He was appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs and in 2012 received Chile’s highest award to a non- national for his work. In 2012, he was also supported by Australia, Canada and the UK to become the Chairman of the prestigious Commonwealth Ministers Action Group and led a Commonwealth Ministerial .team to the Maldives to intervene in the coup which had taken place in that country. He has served as Minister of Local Government as well as held the portfolio of Communications. Currently he is the Minister of Works and Infrastructure. Dr Surujrattan Rambachan is also a cultural activist. Along with his friends and parents they founded the Saraswati Kirtan Mandali on the 17th April 1966 and celebrated in 2014, 48 years since the group was first formed at the Mandir at Siparia Old Road, Avocat. During this period the group has conducted over 1200 Satsanghs. Dr Surujrattan Rambachan himself Started his Discourses on the Ramayan in 1985 and completed his 100th Ramayan Yagna at Divali Nagar in 2004 and his 108th in 2005. Dr Rambachan introduced to Trinidad the idea of the nonstop singing of 108 bhajans and has done so on six occasions since 1986. It is widely believed that he is the first person to have sung 108 bhajans non stop in the world. He does this for special purposes. He is the author of several books on the Ramayana, including; 1. Rekindling the Human Spirit, a set of 72 short discourses from ramayan ideally suited for temple services 2. Leadership Lessons from the Ramayan, a text on leadership from the Life and practice of Sri Ram 3. Values that Empower the Hindu Way Of Life 4. The Child in the Ramayan, with the emphasis being on Hindu Parenting 5. The Hindu Marriage, 21st century Challenges and the Solutions from the Ramayan 6.106 Management Truths . 1000 copies of this book was donated to the Rotary Club of Penal to raise funds for Children with medical problems. 7. Lessons hanuman taught 8. The Essence of Shivrathri 9. Cases in Behavioral Science. This is a series of case studies for teaching in Management of Human Resources. Dr Rambachan is a First Class Honours Graduate in Management Studies from UWI, St Augustine and of the University Of Western Ontario, Canada, Richard Ivey School of Business. He was the recipient of a CIDA Scholarship in 1971. Amongst his proud moments is the recognition given to him by the Natioinal Council for Indian Culture as their Guest of Honour at their Divali nagar Celebrations in 2011. He describes as one of his best experiences a one hour concert he did on All India Radio in 2012 when he sang eight bhajans to live musical accompaniment of musicians from All India Radio.
