Should Federal Agencies Be Held Responsible For GM’s - TopicsExpress

Should Federal Agencies Be Held Responsible For GM’s Failures Some have suggested that perhaps employees at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a federal agency tasked with overseeing the automobile industry, should be held responsible for failing to supervise companies such as GM appropriately. However, subjecting the NHTSA and its employees to potential sanctions for the recall debacles at some of the world’s largest automobile manufacturers is a poor idea. Sanctioning employees at the NHTSA when executives at General Motors, Nissan and Toyota were unaware of defects won’t resolve the very real problems at those companies. For instance, pursuing the employees at the NHTSA takes away from the real liability concerns and problems facing the industry. Additionally, attempting to hold federal regulators responsible, shifts the blame away from the engineers, managers and executives at General Motors who allegedly suppressed vital safety data. As such, the public and injured car accident victims should focus on identifying the true extent of the safety defects and work towards finding ways to remedy those problems for the future.
