Should we eat red meat? Does it cause Cancer? There are a lot of scares about lots of things that cause cancer these days, smoking, being overweight, over-consumption of meat, food additives, barbecues, pickled foods, sausages, spam, corned beef, salami, and beer all have a risk but do we stop doing any of them? Well do you want to stop doing all these things and more? Cancer research UK says “trying to find out how diet affects cancer is extremely complicated”. cancerresearchuk.org/cancer-help/about-cancer/causes-symptoms/causes/diet-causing-cancer So should you give up red meat? I can imagine that the majority of the people reading this are sports people, and even if you aren’t this information could be of use to you. Beef contains the highest concentration out of protein foods of amino acid Leucine which signals your muscles to increase protein synthesis. According to bodybuilding “In order for protein balance to become positive post-workout, dietary protein - and specifically the amino acid Leucine - must be consumed.” If there is not enough Leucine in the body post workout, the body will not create enough new skeletal muscle protein and therefore muscles will not grow and renew themselves properly, damaged cells will not replace and the body will even break down existing muscle to regrow new cells and therefore recovery will take longer and you will not get as much from your workout. So my answer? If you want to see a benefit from your workout, eating beef is the fastest and most effective way. Just follow the advice of Cancer research and doctors and don’t over-consume any one type of food, everything in moderation.
