Should we skip the kiss? When we speak to a number of candidates attending our First Aid courses or when chatting with current trained First Aiders at events we volunteer at, we often get told that breaths are not needed now and they know this based on the Vinnie Jones Hard and Fast Hands Only CPR video that has been produced by the British Heart Foundation. Now let me make one thing clear, I think the video is excellent at showing untrained bystanders who want to help when someone has collapsed with a cardiac arrest what to do but the video is aimed at that audience only the untrained bystander. I also know the ASA cleared the video ad, stating: .... did not believe the ad would discourage those who could provide mouth-to-mouth resuscitation from doing as they had been trained to, and as they would be advised by the emergency services. However, marketing of chest compression only CPR has lead many trained first aiders who know how to perform effective compression and rescue breaths to now think they can do hands only CPR and I believe this could decrease survival rates for those suffering cardiac arrest. Teaching CPR including ventilations offers the best chance of survival for all cardiac arrest victims, and chest compressions with rescue breaths will continue to be part of gold standard CPR. So for all qualified First Aiders, lets not get caught up with the catchy headlines such as “skip the kiss” and remember our training.
