Show their shaame. I wrote to my local Mp Neil Parish to register my concern here is his reply: Dear Ms. Maddock, Thank you for contacting me about the 2004 Hunting Act. I appreciate the strong feelings that many people have on this issue and I share your concern in ensuring the welfare of all animals. I am aware that a cross-party alliance of MPs and farmers groups is calling for an amendment to the Hunting Act to allow a full pack of dogs to be used to flush out foxes. It is making a proposal, which will be properly examined by the Department and, in the end, the House of Commons would have to decide. In the event of a free vote on repealing the Hunting Act, I would vote to repeal it. In my judgement the Act does nothing to protect wild animals and, in many cases, is actually detrimental to animal welfare when other methods of control are deployed, a number of which can be indiscriminate. I am sorry if this is not the response which you were seeking. I appreciate that many people have sincerely held concerns about hunting and I respect their view. However, having considered the matter carefully I do not believe that the welfare of animals is served by the Hunting Act. Thank you once again for contacting me about this important matter. There is no scientific evidence that foxes are a significant cause of lambs going missing, or that killing foxes would solve the problem. I’m convinced that the amended exemptions would be abused by hunts, and would be used as an alibi to avoid prosecution. This would result in many more cruel and illegal hunts of foxes and deer - bringing back hunting with dogs ‘by the back door’. The amendment would make it much more difficult to enforce the Hunting Act 2004. The limitation of using only two dogs in most exemptions makes abuse more evident and difficult to defend. Removing this limitation in the ‘flushing to guns’ exemption would allow many hunts to choose this exemption to cover up their illegal activities. I strongly believe in a compassionate society where animals are not chased and/or torn apart by packs of dogs for “sport”. The British public’s support for the hunting ban is overwhelming: 80% say they want the hunting ban to remain, and 85% want deer hunting to stay illegal. The same polling shows majority support for the ban across party political boundaries and in rural communities. As your constituent, I strongly urge you to vote against any amendment that increases the number of hounds that can be used in exempt hunting. I look forward to your reply.
