Two studies reported in the renowned publication agree in saying that the earthquake that took place last April in the town of Iquique, 8.2 degrees on the Richter scale, is not expected. Our results indicate that Iquique was not the earthquake that was predicted, say the authors of a research led by Gavin Hayes of the United States Geological Survey. They explain important sections of the subduction zone in northern Chile had not been broken in almost 150 years, so it is probable that future earthquakes occurring potentially north of Iquique sequence. Meanwhile, specialists second report highlighted that the earthquake in Iquique exploded near a third of the northern Chile seismic gap. This now represents a significant increase in seismic hazard explained. The Big One may be yet to come, said Roland Burgmann turn, of the University of California, in a commentary also published in Nature. Chilean seismologists and world now face the difficult task of communicating this uncertain danger, but maybe high without sounding alarmist, he said. Según explican, secciones importantes de la zona de subducción del norte de Chile no se habían roto en casi 150 años, por lo que es probable que los futuros sismos tengan lugar, potencialmente, al norte de la secuencia de Iquique. Por su parte, los especialistas del segundo informe, resaltan que el terremoto de Iquique estalló cerca de un tercio de la brecha sísmica de Chile norte. Esto supone ahora un aumento significativo de la amenaza sísmica, explicaron. El Big One todavía puede estar por venir, dijo a su vez Roland Burgmann, de la Universidad de California, en un comentario publicado también en Nature.
