Sicily came next. As they moved across the island, the men found a bicycle factory in a small town. As he was now a SGT., Uncle Roy and the men decide to ride some bikes. They headed in all different directions and as Uncle went around a corner and down a narrow street he rounds a curve and smack- right into a big truck which took up the entire road. He thought for a while he might get by but then the mirror struck him. He comes to in a hospital and spent a week there. On to Anzio he goes and he is torn about the ‘Dear John’ letter he had received from his girl back in Ripley. Soon this very memorable time in his life is complicated by an Italian girl who takes an interest in her ‘Americano’. He went around with her when he could and spent a good bit of ‘quality’ time with her. He did not have marriage in mind but she got it in her head. Roy gets to thinking that she wanted to marry him for a trip to the States. Roy decides to stay away from the Italian woman. Wherever he went she followed. She found him in Rome, Naples, and then to Southern France. She would get men to hide her in supplies headed for the front. Long after he got home, she sent him a picture of her in a bare mid-drift shirt. It was in a carved wooden hearts along with a copy of a picture he had given her in the other. I still have them. Her photo was risky for the day. If I had been him I would have brought her home, but I digress. She wrote him several times and he would not write back so not to encourage her. She married an aristocrat in Marseilles. They owned a casino and she invited Roy to come and be chief of security. He turned it down because he feared he would get into a tryst. You know I think she really loved him.
