Sigh...what a joke!!! When I was CEO of NZ Football, I was at a meeting or two about the change in stadiums. Of all the codes involved - Warriors, league, union, football, speedway, stock cars, cricket, athletics - None were happy with the dumb ideas that are still been driven by the Council. Its pretty simple really: 1) move speedway to Waikaraka park - build a world class facility, one class runs fri, one class runs sat - no noise issues...great crowds, a venue that is well used. 2) League and Football share Mt Smart. Its a huge place, NZ footballs teams are at home once in a blue moon, Warriors deserve the right and respect to stay there. $70mill my arse - no one wants gold plated toilets. 3) Athletics goes to Millennium Institute, and one of the many parks out south. There are a number of quality athletic facilities - you dont need Mt Smart - lets not have another stupid Eden Park legacy decision... 4) Close Eden Park and get on with a world class stadium on the waterfront. Its a disaster, and the crowds are getting worse, its got noise issues, no one can afford to rent it - bad decisions are made ridiculous when they are not recognized and accepted that they were bad. Imagine the ABs, Auckland ( drop North Harbour, its stupid) in the center of the city! Or how about Man Utd! Or a world class rock band...and then straight into town, and easier to use public transport. 5) Cricket goes to Western Springs - I am a speedway stalwart, but 14 meetings a year isnt enough, noise issues kill the joint, concerts arent that good for the animals either... 5) North Harbour - dont make it bigger - make it smaller - Auckland needs a quality stadium that seats between 5-15k and that is actually affordable... Its so bloody simple.... I am tagging people in who I know are involved with their codes, not because they support my thoughts on this. We need to have robust debate, rather than the stupidity that transpired over Eden Park.
