Signs in the Sun, Moon, and Stars – A Grand Solar Minimum? Posted by Planet In Distress on November 24, 2013 On this blog I concentrate on the effect of sin on the physical earth and on the society of man, and I reflect on how these effects amount to the fulfillment of Christ’s prophecy in Matthew 24:6-8. At the same time, though, Christ had a few more things to say about what was coming than just the few verses I cite, and indeed not only Matthew (chapter 24 and first half of 25), but also Mark (chapter 13) and Luke (chapter 21) record Christ’s prophecies in parallel. One of the things Christ said would happen would be signs in the sun, moon, and starts. This is outside my area of expertise, but it is within my area of keen interest and so I include this post about solar cycles and the possibility of a new “Maunder Minimum”. It seems that the sun moves in cycles. Every 11 years, we see a solar maximum where sunspot and solar flare activity peaks. We saw such a maximum recently, though it s a very subdued maximum. In between the maximums we see a minimum, where the sun is pretty quiet. But interrupting these cycles are “grand maximums” and “grand minimums” that can last for a number of decades (perhaps a century) and that mark profound periods of intense activity or complete quiet by the sun. These maximums and minimums are thought to affect the climate of the earth. Some scientists argue that we have not seen a true Grand Solar Minimum – a Maunder Minimum – for 10,000 years (a timeline that is inconsistent with the timelines in my Bible), and some scientists say there is a fair chance that we could move into a Maunder Minimum since sun activity is essentially in free-fall. There is significant debate over whether any kind of significant solar minimum would affect earth’s climate. The consensus so far appears to be that solar cycles are a weak force and increasing greenhouse gases already result in more change that would be offset by a solar minimum. The truth is that we don’t know what will happen if we go to a significant solar minimum. We could see a period of significant impact on human society, or we could see nothing happen at all. Scientists currently estimate that there is perhaps a 30% chance of the sun going into a Maunder solar minimum in the next few years. But whether or not we go, the mere fact we are discussing it indicates to me that this could be a small part of the “sun, moon, and starts” part of Christs prophecy.
