Sikorski as the creator and leader of the idea of Solidarity Award – Warsaw 03th June 2014. Sikorski told journalists in the Sejm on Friday that the Solidarność (Solidarity) Award is intended to remind everyone that Communism ended in Poland. I do not believe that someone can have an exclusive right to the word “solidarność” (solidarity) or to the memory of those times when the whole society was in it together and we all wanted freedom. The people of Solidarność should understand that this award also honours them, because it expresses our universal feeling of solidarity with those who have fought and continue to fight for freedom today,”. Asked whether he thought that using the word solidarność in the award’s name could start a conflict with the chairman of NSZZ Solidarność, Sikorski replied: It is not us who will stir it. I hope that the intention behind this award will also become clear to those who are not yet convinced of the idea.” The Solidarity Award, worth a million euro, will be handed out for the first time on 4 June, 2014, on the twenty-fifth anniversary of Poland’s first partially free parliamentary elections after WW II.
