Silex-Biography as written by Paul Drosdzol There is a fallacious perception that Poetry and its fair handmaiden, Beauty, are somewhat delicate, almost fey … even effete creatures. Poetry and Beauty are also, goes the common understanding, Servants of the Light. Therefore, conventional wisdom posits, Poetry and Beauty can never dwell in brutality and darkness. Not true. Meet rocking gothic band Silex – or, better still, listen to their music – whose poetry and ultimate beauty come clothed in the sweetest brutality and smoothest darkness. For every plangent stroke of the violin, there is a powerful downtuned riff straining like a coal-black panther in the traps … for every elaborate, theatrical gesture from Silex’s lithe vocalist Stephan, there are drumstrokes delivered with a blacksmith’s fist … for every ethereal, ghostly visitation from the keyboards waits the firebrand, earthbound Spirit of Rock ‘n’ Roll. This is not the whimsical trilling of sprites, but the roaring metallic symphony of the elemental giants. This Pretoria six-piece, formed in 1997, certainly look the part of a gothic band with their black-orchid dark apparel and starbright jewels; but blushing gothic violets beware: this band kicks ass. The liquorice-dense guitar chords, deep and powerful vocals and diamond-hard dynamics make the Silex live experience a moving, unforgettable, dramatic one. Something moves in the darkness – powerful, feral and menacing. It is … Beauty. - Paul Drosdzol
