Silliman, Holy Cross studes to compete in Asian Math Wizard in HK, Singapore By Jennifer C. Tilos Monday 8th of July 2013 DUMAGUETE CITY, July 8 (PIA) -- Eight students from Silliman University of School of Basic Education and one from Holy Cross High School qualified for an international mathematics competition in Hong Kong and Singapore. Nine students are now official members of the Philippine team competing in the Search for the Asian Math Wizard in two categories: elementary and high school. according to Mathematics Trainers Guild coordinator Rosanne Ferrer Salve of Dumaguete Center. Competing in Hongkong on July 24 to 28 are Grade 2 students Peter Martin Nasvik, Jev Ulric Torres, and Carlos Miguel Angelo Salazar of Silliman University and Joef Alphonse Ho of Holy Cross High School; Michah Edem, Grade 6 and Hazel Amada, 2nd year high school, both from Silliman University. Other math wizards to vie in Singapore on August 2-5 are Silliman University students Ashley Simone Teves, Grade 3; Francis Roy Albina and Luis Reyes, both in Grade 4. Salve said participants to the Search for Math Wizards, Environmental Math Contest, and Asian Math Cup include Grades 2, 6 and 2nd year high school students in Hongkong. In Singapore, the Grades 3 and 4 will compete in the International Mathematics. As part of the Philippine Team, the Dumaguete City math student-competitors will be carrying the banner not only of their respective schools but also of Negros Oriental. “Their achievement is monumental as they had to go through the local, national, and international trainings and exams to qualify for the international competition,” said Salve. With this, a group of parents lead by Elve Nasvik and Anne Salazar appealed to the public to solicit some financial assistance for the math students’ transportation, accommodation and registration fee to join the competitions.
