Simon Kurian never meant to return to Varanasi. After a difficult visit while filming a documentary for the BBC on the River Ganges in 1987, disturbed by the disregard with which the great river is treated, he swore he would never return. But life had other plans; Simon returned to Varanasi albeit reluctantly, over two decades later. Simons upcoming book ‘Ganga Ma’ is a recounting of his visit. Through photographs and words Simon tries to unravel the spirit that steeps every wall and street and stone of this ancient city; with each frame to translate the life and living of the people who live there and the millions who visit. Most of all he tries to capture the essence of the great River Ganga, at once tragic and transcendent.
