Simon Si > Blacks Fighting Back Against RacismIn the Dominican Republic, there is a KKK group made up of light skinned Dominicans to terrorize the darker skinned Haitians. SMHIn 1804, African Slaves from Haiti fought the French, won, and created the first Black republic in the Western hemisphere. But since their neighbors were still enslaved by Spain, so in 1822 the Haitians invaded the other part of the island with a heavy military presence made up of 100% free Blacks and drove out the Spanish from the Dominican republic, and freed the Dominicans. Once the Spanish slave masters and colonizers were completely driven out, the Haitian army retreated its forces back to Haiti. However, the Dominicans, being of lighter complexion, did not appreciate the good will gesture of their liberating Black neighbors, and actually annexed the country back to Spain a few years later, preferring to be colonized by the White Spaniards than to be free, and even celebrated the day the Haitians retreated their forces from Dominican republic as their independence day. Dominicans now even have their own KKK local chapter to terrorize the thousands of dark skinned Haitians who have been living there for hundreds of years. The Dominican KKK proudly participated in the 2014 carnival there. A statement issued by Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Culture offered this explanation:“Every group is free to choose their themes, whether using elements of the Dominican identity or universal culture in their costumes.” The statement continued: The Dominican Republic is a “free country” where people are at liberty “to express their creativity.”
