~~Simple Task, Not Listening~~ Had to move a few heifers today...30 some. Used Gabby solo. It was a little warm maybe. She gathered the heifers up just fine, moving them along just fine, get to the lot and things still fine. Ask her to walk up and she peels out to the outside of the lot and goes down the fenceline like shes gonna get ahead. Gabby...NO, come. Gabby comes back, I ask her to walk up and blam, off she goes again. She knows better, she really does. I go to the pickup, get a collar and a rope. We are going to work this out because she knows better and Im not sure why we are going to have this conversation, but we are. I put her on the rope and she looks at me like, Uk oh. I put a collar on her and you can feel her tense up. I tell her we are going to work through this hearing issue. I ask her to walk up and she runs right between me and the cattle. WT? I block her path of travel with my sorting whip and she jumps right over it! WT? Ok, lets see if I can make connection with you Gabby. I ask her to walk up and she is panicky. Wrong time to panic Gabby. It took a few laps back and forth and around the pen but we finally found common ground on communicating with each other. Funny how she remembered what walk up meant. I have used her mostly for pasture work. But she knows how to work pens and stuff. This was clearly a matter of not listening. I think we are back on the same page now. Shes a great cowdog and loves rough work but something as simple was ignoring a walk up...well, not today. I wanted walk up not get ahead.
