Simple but Powerful by Skip Heitzig | Read 1 KINGS 17:1-9 Elijah, who was from Tishbe in Gilead, told King Ahab, As surely as the LORD, the God of Israel, lives—the God I serve—there will be no dew or rain during the next few years until I give the word! 1 KINGS 17:1 Ahab, one of Israels worst kings, was a man of the world. Through his wife, Jezebel, Ahab introduced the worship of Baal to the Israelites. In stark contrast, Elijah was a fiery, articulate prophet who was also a miracle worker. When the nation of Israel was wandering away from God and becoming embroiled in big problems, God raised up Elijah, who was perfect for this situation. The prophet warned Ahab that it would not rain again until Elijah gave the word. And just like that, Elijah suspended rain and dew for three and a half years! For part of this time, Elijah hid from King Ahab at a place east of the Jordan River. The prophet could drink from the brook and eat the food God sent by ravens. When the brook dried up, the Lord sent Elijah to a widow who had only enough oil and flour for one more meal. But when the prophet asked her for it, she gave it to him. As a result, the widow, her son, and Elijah were able to eat for many days, and miraculously, there was always enough even though the drought continued. James 5:16-17 says, The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results. Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for three and half years! There is great power in simple prayer. As evangelist Charles Spurgeon said, Prayer pulls the rope down below and the great bell rings above in the ears of God. We need to have this type of commitment to prayer and righteous living. In addition to theology, lets be committed to Knee-ology—kneeling before God in prayer.
