Simple truths: The sanctions and the kindness of Empire. The sanctions are not hurting Russia because they were never actually intended to hurt Russia - to do so would inevitably result in severe collateral damage to the Western economies, most of which are skirting a renewed recession (and not just Europe - US Q1 annualised GDP was +0.1%, i.e. less than Russia) The sanctions were intended for domestic consumption only - in the absence of any realistic military option, and as the US Ukraine strategy falls apart in their hands, it was the least they could do to fend of the madcap Right - McCain et al. - and prove that Obama is manly and decisive. The kindness refers to Mr Kerry - if the Russians will not scream in pain, then the US administration will obligingly do it for them! Kerry rants on about the very steep price Russia has already paid for the essentially hollow sanctions…apparently, Moscow has failed to notice, though President Putin has warned that any meaningful sanctions would be met with targeted counter-measures - which G7 business does not even wish to contemplate.
