Simply sharing. The Golden Era continues. The 1950 Benicia High School varsity football team had a 7-1 record and were Solano County Athletic League Champions. Benicia 18 Amador 0 Benicia 25 Marin Catholic 14 Benicia 6 Livermore 7 Benicia 32 St. Vincents 6 Benicia 39 Rio Vista 12 Benicia 18 Armijo 12 Benicia 18 Winters 12 Benicia 27 Vacaville 13 The scores shown above are from the yearbook. The information in my possession which Coach Goettel recorded shows the following difference in scores: Benicia 25 Marin Catholic 13; Benicia 35 St. Vincents 6; and Benicia 32 Rio Vista 13. So close to being an undefeated season. Bill Corn, tackle, was the biggest player for Benicia as a 6-4 tall and 265 pounds, 17 year old senior. Tom Sorenson, fullback, 6-0 tall and 187 pounds, 18 year old senior, is listed as having already won three varsity letters in football. Varsity Roster: Dwight Hamro, Richard House, Gene Curry, John Martin, Alvin Bortisser, Nelson Renslow, Bill Corn, Bob Pearce, Bob Winkler, Charles Chase, Ken Leggett, Charles Glass, Rolland Hamlin, Bob Padget, Roy Ball, Robert Bortisser, Lyle Hubbard, Jack Rahill, Howard Smothers, Chet Carr, Bill Smothers, Doug Wold, Tom Sorenson, Jim Earp, Don Cardoza, Don Trent, Dave Johnson, Bill Murphy, Eddie Pettit, Don Sloan, Richard Silva, Mickey Craig Shortly after the above listing there were changes in the roster and the starting lineup from the first game of the season. Deletions were: Alvin Bortisser and Chet Carr, and additions Clarence Phillips and Earl Ellis. Tom Sorenson was the varsity Most Valuable Player and Jack Rahill was Honorary Captain. Livermores touchdown came on what some have referred to as a desperation 82 yard pass play. Richard House, Howard Smothers, Bob Pearce, and Jim Earp were named to the Vallejo Times Herald All SCAL football team. The JVs lost all five of their games. Junior Varsity Roster: B. Brown, D. Cathey, A. Clarke, M. Coakley, K. Coen, L. Cole, R. Dacapias, D. Davis, M. Earp, E. Egbert, J. Hammers, R. House, G. Hughett, B. F. Kyle, R. Lawton, R. Logan, S. McHann, P. Peltier, F. Sanchez, B. Sevier, B. Sherwood, J. Silva, R. Silva, F. Souza, D. Speer, A. Talamantes, H. Tennis, T. Tidwell, B. Tittle, A. Triplett, G. Vice The only coaches listed for coaching football were: Varsity Head Coach, Phil Goettel; Assistant, Barney Corrigan; Assistant, George Drolette. As always, they did a good job.
