Since 2001, more than 1,450 men from the army, navy, air force and the paramilitary forces have died without being killed by the ‘enemy’ while battling low-intensity conflicts and insurgencies. Some 90 of them have lost their lives in cases of fratricide — “fragging” — where soldiers have killed colleagues. But for a solitary exception, the number of suicides by Indian military and paramilitary personnel every year since 2001 has remained in three figures.
