Since Alabama’s state legislative body chooses to do nothing to repeal Common Core, our next hope is to change the makeup of the State Board of Education. Three of the eight seats are being contested this year and include candidates who are opposed to Common Core. Betty Peters (bettypeters.nationbuilder), the incumbent in District 2, is facing competition for her seat. Betty is a staunch conservative and has opposed Common Core from the beginning. District 2 includes Cleburne, Clay, Randolph, Tallapoosa, Chambers, Lee, Russell, Barbour, Coffee, Dale , Henry, Geneva, and Houston Counties. Patricia McGriff (patriciamcgriff), an opponent of Common Core, is opposed in the Republican Primary for District 6, which seat is being vacated. District 6 includes Morgan, Marshall, Cullman, St Clair, Calhoun, Cherokee, and (a part of) Dekalb Counties. Mike Parsons (3Rs4Alabama), an opponent of Common Core, is opposing the current District 8 Representative (Mary Scott Hunter a major supporter of Common Core) in the Republican Primary. District 8 includes Madison, Jackson, and Etowah Counties and parts of Limestone and Dekalb Counties. If you live in one of these districts, you need to give one of these three candidates at the polls. Even if you do not live in their districts, their election is important to you as the decisions of the State Board of Education affect the entire state. If you oppose Common Core, it is imperative that you give these candidates your support. Please check on their websites and volunteer to assist them however you can. These websites also provide methods to make monetary donations to their campaigns. The Pro-Common Core candidates have the backing of well-financed groups, such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In order to buy advertising time and get the word out, these candidates need grass roots support. All donations, however small, add up. Please help Betty, Patricia, and Mike in their fight against Common Core Standards in Alabama.
