Since I am still using my UK driving licence and with the continuous threat from the many traffic police officers patrolling the streets these days, I thought I should come clean and try to acquire a Sudanese Driving licence. The UK Driving Licence has not got me into trouble so far. Well, I was told it is a straightforward exchange process and that I will get the Sudanese licence in no time, or so they said. Yesterday I headed off to the Traffic Police HQ and joined the many queues. I was told that the first thing I should do it to have my UK licence officially translated at Arabicisation and Translation Centre at the University of Khartoum. So, I went back to where I came from. The translators at the UofK were very cooperative and did the translation in a record time. Today I had my second pilgrimage day. I was told to do the medical check. Paying 25 pounds, I passed the vision test with reasonable grades. I proudly got my badge “لائف طبياً”. The psychological assessment was a bit bemusing. I answered questions on hallucination, suicidal thoughts, breakdown, images playing in my mind et etc. The young lady then wrote on the paper declaring me لائف نفسياً to discover that I am a teacher at the UofK. We chatted a bit about her certificate that she expects to receive from the universitys academic secretary office. I thought been declared mentally sane is the end of the matter. Waiting in a long queue for some time, the white dressed officer eventually commanded me in the strongest possible tone to go to the driving test site, يلا أمشى الميدان ---- هناك أمشى قلت ليك- جنب الأمن العام. Apparently they want me to do a full driving test. I am wondering about the alleged exchange!! This is a process for a new licence, it seems.. I returned empty handed... for the second day ---- The next time I go to that place I will make sure I am backed up by Vitamin W.
