Since Im apparently finding lots of cool space stuff today, heres simulator audio of an actual RTLS abort training run. This was the Space Shuttles crazy Return-To-Launch-Site abort mode which was never tried in real life. John Young, who had a steady heartbeat through Apollo flights and flew the very first Space Shuttle flight before the whole system had ever been test flown before, apparently said of the RTLS abort mode, Lets not try this as a test, thats just playing Russian roulette. The video here overlays the NASA Simulator audio over an Orbiter Space SImulator recreation of the RTLS abort. One of my favorite things to do in Orbiter and I did it a lot. But I still had at best about a 2/3rds chance of bringing it back to safely to ditch and on only a few occasions could I get it back on the runway (which is easy to risk in a simulator but certainly not someone anyone would feel safe trying in real life Im sure).
