Since its Veterans Day, I thought Id post this again. In 1995, the BBC broadcasted a 3-part miniseries called The Living Dead: Three Films About the Power of the Past, produced by Adam Curtis, who would go on to make the highly controversial miniseries The Power of Nightmares: The Rise of the Politics of Fear a decade later. The first episode, On the Desperate Edge of Now is in my opinion one of the best documentaries having to do with World War II ever produced. It begins with an exploration of the Nazi glorification of Germanys past in order to give meaning to the Third Reich. It goes on to chronicle the American efforts after the War to show the true nature of Hitlers Germany via the Nuremberg Trials, and the unexpected consequences this had for the people of Germany for decades to come. In the middle of it all are the regular American soldiers who fought the Good War and the people of Germany who would ultimately have to come to terms with what the war really meant for them. The title comes from the diary of an American soldier writing towards the end of the Allied campaign in Europe: We are living on the desperate edge of now.
