Since last October nearly 100,000 women and (predominantly) children fleeing violence, trafficking and other human rights abuses have been apprehended at the US border. Rather than being evaluated for asylum and treated for the traumas they’ve endured, many are being shipped back to their home countries to almost certain death. Now legislation has emerged to roll back the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act to expedite the deportation of these victims. Beyond the political back and forth surrounding how to deal with this growing humanitarian crisis is the lived realities of women and children who have escaped persecution. These are refugees – right here in the US – fleeing dangerous politically volatile situations, and they deserve humane treatment and protection under international and domestic law.
