Since most of us all seem to be a little more in need of creative real-world-reflective literary humor (but humor nonetheless) after the shameful tragedy of yesterday in France, I thought I would share with you a *terrific* poem written to me around Christmas-time (which I just found lying around my mailbox *today), by a good USC playwright friend of mine named Kevin Michael West. Hope you all get a nice mournful laugh out of it! :) RHUBARB PIE In this world in which we dwell Are horrors worse than any hell Atrocities that horrify And yet, I love my rhubarb pie Famine. Hatred. Nuclear war. Diseases that have no known cure Child addicts getting high But still, I love my rhubarb pie I love it morning, night, and noon I love it with a fork or spoon I love it alone, or in a group I love it best with mushroom soup So go on about your acid rain Your death, your loneliness and pain. Human rights are jeopardized “Casablanca” colorized Crimes rates soaring out of sight Afraid to walk the streets at night Matthew Broderick’s growing grayer The depletion of the ozone layer Pets run over by pick-up trucks Life’s unfair. I’m mad. It sucks. I come back with my same rebut That I still love my you-know-what Though evil reigns and heaven cries Devils prosper, goodness dies, To one thing I will testify... I’ll always love my rhubarb pie
