Since the brief has been democratically widened with poetry and bible entries here is a great favourite of mine. I first learned of it from Dennis Wheatley. His novels are often written off but they contain excursions into of interesting historical backwaters rarely encountered in “normal” history. I suppose they were the Dan Brown of their time. But in those days we didn’t take the stories seriously. Learned Persians put the responsibility for the quarrel on the Phoenicians. These people came originally from the so-called Red Sea, and as soon as they had penetrated to the Mediterranean and settled in the country where they are today, they took to making long trading voyages.
