Since the moment Laura Smulders crossed the line in her semi final at the 2012 Papandal Supercross Laura knew she had made it into the big league. Not only had she made the main in front of an ecstatic home crowd but shed sealed the deal and her place in the Dutch team for the 2012 London Olympics. Her joy and happiness was there for everyone to see; she could barely contain herself. Fast forward to the London Olympics, while all eyes were on the big hitters like Pajon, Reade, Buchanan and Walker out in gate 8 was the Laura Smulders. Many overlooked her chances to medal but lane 8 gave her space and while sitting in 4th through the tunnel she carved a perfect line through turn to to take the 3rd spot from the silver medalist from Beijing Laetitia Le Corguille.
