Since the time is approaching, I thought I could give my thoughts - TopicsExpress

Since the time is approaching, I thought I could give my thoughts on why Im voting Yes for Independence. I think many people see this as a divorce, with pettiness on both sides saying they will keep this and they can keep that, with empty threats on both sides. But putting politics aside there is a more fundamental reason for Scotland to go Independent. Scotland has always been a proud, ambitious and prosperous nation and 300 years ago it was a respected country that easily supported itself, however Scotland tried to expand its influence like its established English brother through colonisation, but the Darien scheme failed immensely and ruined Scotland financially, so they had to swallow their pride and humbly agree to a union with England to prevent any further disaster. Scotland got back on its feet quickly and for many years has been happy to be part of the union, however our ambition has always be there and right now it is stronger than ever. Sadly though, we cannot act on our ambition in our current position; where the unions capital takes priority over the other members and our votes dont make a difference. (STV had a couple guys on 40 and 50 years old signing up to vote for the first time, because they know their vote matters now.) Some may see a separation as the end of the union, but I see it as the start of a partnership. Scotland and its UK brothers can stand shoulder to shoulder and work together in a way that wouldnt happen in the union. The UK has had a kind of monopolization on itself meaning there has not been much competition within and we have become stagnant. A healthy competition means both sides profit from better and cheaper services and promotes innovation. In the end, I hope we can separate on good terms and the UK understands that it is because of them that we can now go out on our own, and they should feel pride in being a good neighbour to us. Lastly, I would like to link a quote from 300 years ago, from when Scotland was prosperous and a leader in “practical humanist solutions to societal problems that have shaped modern Western society.” We can once again become the country our ancestors created and make a difference in the world. “We look to Scotland for all our ideas of civilisation” - Voltaire
