Since this afternoons shooting in Alkali Flat, the Sacramento Police Department has been overwhelmed with calls for service and too few officers to respond to many of them. Due to these high volumes of calls with no units available, we lifted our suspension Crimewatch Community Patrols and hit the street. Moments later, an alert citizen observed an auto burglary in progress and called police. As luck would have it, Sgt. Matt Young was a block away and the suspect was taken into custody and is on his way to jail. Sgt. Young, in his interview with Public Safety News, indicated the suspect is one of the most prolific burglars in Sacramento. He is also, according to our records, a typical AB 109 failure. We will be following up on on the significant spike in crime in SPD Patrol District 3 and the unacceptable staffing levels for police with City Council this coming Tuesday night.
