Since we were talking about World War II films on the previous post, I would like to hear what everyone thought of this remarkable German mini-series. It had a brief theatrical release in this country, and is now available through itunes. I highly recommend the series. It consist of 3 episodes with each one being 90 minutes in length. After watching the first one, my son and I were hooked, and we proceeded to watch the entire 4.5 hours in one sitting. It was that good. My biggest concern going in was whether the combat sequences would be realistic, and they didnt disappoint. They were as good as anything Ive seen, and better than most. The storyline itself was compelling, and surprisingly plausible, especially when you consider that it could easily have turned into a soap opera. The five main characters were all interesting and sympathetic figures. The producers did not pull any punches as far as the brutality of war, and the presence of the death camps and genocide were ever constant. One thing I did take issue with was the fact that the Polish partisan fighters were portrayed as being fanatically anti-Semitic, as well as staunchly anti-communist. To the point where I started to wonder why they were fighting the Germans in the first place. And when I read some reviews, I found out that I wasnt alone in finding that aspect somewhat troubling. There were numerous complaints about the portrayal, and I think the Polish government issued an official protest over it. Even so, when the series aired on Polish television, it was very popular.
