Singh’s visit was a futile exercise: Separatists Srinagar, June 26:Terming Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Kashmir visit a ‘futile ‘exercise, separatist leaders Wednesday said Government of India (GoI) was never serious in resolving the Kashmir issue. “Kashmir was neither an economic problem nor was it an issue related to good or bad governance. Kashmir issue is a historical reality and VVIP visits to Kashmir or construction activities cannot resolve it,” Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani said in a statement. He said people of Jammu and Kashmir are committed to ongoing movement and won’t give up their struggle despite all the oppressive measures adopted by Government of India. Urging Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to read the writing on wall and fulfill the commitment on resolution of Kashmir issue, Geelani said, “In principle we are not against negotiations. Till now the issue was discussed 150 times but no results were yielded. It was because of stubbornness of Indian government that no progress was achieved on Kashmir front”. Hurriyat Conference (M) spokesman termed PM’s visit as a total failure. “The complete shutdown on his visit in Kashmir should serve as an eye opener for premier and other political leadership of India. The visit of Indian PM could have turned fruitful had he announced some bold steps to solve the Kashmir issue”. He said it was highly unfortunate that Indian government continued with its traditional policy of obduracy and unrealistic politics. “It was aptly expressed by the Indian leadership by just inaugurating a rail line and a hydroelectric power project, but not speaking a word to resolve the Kashmir issue.” The spokesman said visit of Indian Prime Minister has rubbed salt on the wounds of Kashmiris, who did not talk about Kashmir issue to alleviate their suffering. “Kashmiris have expressed their regret and are highly disappointed with politics played by Indian leadership, which is contrary to the ground realities and their political aspirations.” Asking India to stop looking Kashmir as an economic or administrative problem, he said Delhi should see it in the context of regional peace. “It should emulate the politics based on reality to address the Kashmir issue”. “Since 1947, doling out of economic packages had not changed Kashmir’s disputed status. Kashmiris have shown their absolute association with struggle by observing strike on the visit of Indian prime minister,” he added. JKLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik said nobody was hoping of a breakthrough from PM’ visit and insisted that for resolution of the issue, GoI has to be serious. “By putting separatist leaders under house arrest during PM’s visit was itself an example of non seriousness of Delhi to address the issue,” he said. Terming the visit as a ‘useless’ exercise, Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) chairman Shabir Ahmad Shah said Kashmiris should be given the right of self determination to determine their fate. “Such kind of visits won’t yield anything and nobody should take it serious. India should peacefully and amicably resolve the Kashmir issue by granting people of J&K the chance to determine their fate” he said.
