NABLUS (Ma’an) – While virtually all public school teachers in the West Bank are on open strike, Wael Muqadi insists on attending his classes in the northern village of Yutma near Nablus. Muqadi, 27, who teaches at a preparatory school, is possibly the only teacher in the West Bank who opposes the strike announced by the general union of public school teachers. “We don’t want our new generation to be ignorant. … Imagine that teachers, civil servants and doctors go on strike, how will the Palestinian people look? We want to establish a state and so we have to pay a price.” He told Ma’an Wednesday that he opposed the union’s decision to go on strike and never adhered to it “for a single day”. He argues that teachers have already been granted all their rights. “I personally got a salary increase of 200 shekels raising my monthly wage to 3,097 shekels, and that is enough to guarantee that one lives in dignity in light of the dire economic conditions all the Palestinian people are suffering.” “I believe our people are living a tough stage as a result of settlers’ attacks, negotiations and international pressure being practiced on the Palestinian leadership, and so we must support the Palestinian president in this battle.” Muqadi noted that in Syria, “despite the war and the daily destruction, the education process hasn’t stopped for a single day.” Asked about possible repercussions from the teachers union, he said he wasn’t worried “because I believe in my mission.” Muqadi added that he arranged a van to transport pupils to school back and forth at his expense
