Siobhans post has re-highlighted for me the farcical nature of our immigration system. Ive also seen it as my partner works in a retail shop were foreign workers on working visas are common (perhaps 25% of the staff). The government is spending billions on encouraging childbirth, the justification often being an alleged growing demographic problem blowing future budgets. However, when I thought about this, and the amount of taxpayer spent on educating children (particularly when so many tax on tertiary education) the break even point for the government must be somewhere in their 30s, if not later. Thats hardly a solution even for medium term budget problems. Yet we send working productive people home, even if theyve been in the country for a year or more. We disrupt Australian businesses by doing so. Whilst I can understand being hesitant about permanent residency/citizenship due to the potential obligations it places on Australia, surely working visas should not have limits on their duration, only to be revoked if the person commits a crime/cant support themselves. Theyre a short term budget solution just staring us in the face. We spend hundreds of thousands educating children to be productive members of our society, and were knocking back ones other nations are giving to us for free!
